After a complaint by the Public Prosecutor’s Office, the process of a Brazilian woman arrested for trafficking advances in Indonesia

The case of Brazilian Manuela Vitória de Araújo, 19 years old, arrested with drugs upon arriving at Bali Airport, advanced in Indonesian justice. The Public Prosecutor’s Office denounced her for trafficking in narcotics and possession of psychotropic drugs.

She was arrested upon arriving at Bali International Airport with 3.9 kg of cocaine on 31 December. Indonesia has a zero tolerance policy for drug crimes.

The Brazilian awaits the trial while the defense in Brazil tries to gather evidence that she did not know about the presence of drugs in her luggage.

Manuela’s family, who live in Belém, Pará, managed to hire a specialist in the Asian country who has mediated with the Justice.

Manuela has been talking to family members on Tuesdays and Thursdays. According to the lawyer responsible for her family in Brazil, Davi Lira da Silva, Manuela is worried about a possible condensation.

According to him, Manuela was used as a “mule” by a criminal organization in Santa Catarina to carry the drugs. She didn’t know what was in her bags and traveled under the promise that she would take surf lessons.

The family fears a possible death penalty. In 2015, Brazilians Marco Archer Cardoso Moreira, 53, and Rodrigo Muxfeldt Goularte, 42, were executed for drug trafficking in Indonesia.

The Embassy of Brazil in Indonesia is monitoring Manuela’s situation.
