After a fight between companies, Rio presents plans for the New Year’s Eve party on Wednesday

After the silent turn from 2020 to 2021 and the party without shows on the last New Year’s Eve, the city of Rio de Janeiro will announce this week which will be the molds of the party scheduled for less than 20 days from now. Before the announcement, the companies that participated in the bidding fought a legal fight to be able to organize the party.

The winner of the auction was M/Checon Design e Cenografia LTDA, based in São Paulo and specialized in assembling, from the structure of large shows, to field hospitals during the pandemic.

Among the events with scenarios built by them are festivals such as Tomorrowland, Lollapalooza and Rock in Rio, with participation in the World Cup and the Olympics, when held in Brazil. During the document submission process, however, the São Paulo company was disqualified.

The notice provided for large-format LED screens in Copacabana, a sound system with stages for concerts and fireworks. The fireworks will be fired simultaneously at nine points: Copacabana Beach, Piscinão de Ramos, IAPI da Penha, Praia do Flamengo, Praia de Sepetiba, Madureira, Praia da Bica (Governador Island), Praia da Capela (Guaratiba) and Praia da Moreninha (Paquetá). For the show in Copacabana, 10 ferries will be auctioned and the fireworks display lasts for at least 12 minutes.

The problems started when the proposal from SRCOM, competitor of M/Checon, presented a letter of intent to sponsor a pharmaceutical company, which was considered vacant by the City Hall team.

The document spoke of ‘real intention to evaluate the proposed sponsorship quota’ of the event promoter. It was considered insufficient and, with the additional deadline, the company got a letter from the government of Rio de Janeiro suggesting that it would use the Culture Incentive Law to help fund the fireworks, which also did not meet the proposal in the public notice, according to the team promoting the event.

The winner of the auction had already presented a letter from a company of glass bottles and drink packaging, with the intention of contributing R$ 15 million to the party.

In October, SRCOM questioned the result and the documents presented by the winner, but in November the Riotur Commission, which takes care of the party, rejected the appeal and kept M/Checon as organizer of New Year’s Eve in Rio de Janeiro.

Last week, however, M/Checon advised the City Hall that it had lost its sponsorship and withdrew from the party. The way out was to summon the runner-up to throw the party. The City Hall and Riotur informed the CNN that there will be no impact on the schedule.

The announcement with the details of the party will be made on the morning of next Wednesday (14th), at an event at the Copacabana Palace.

THE CNN found out that there will be ten stages, two of them in Copacabana, with Brazilian artists who have international baggage. All contemplated neighborhoods will have a samba school ending the shows.

Although there is currently no type of imposition by the Health Department in relation to health restrictions due to Covid-19, Riotur claims that, if the epidemiological scenario changes, it can adapt the party.

THE CNN SRCom, Rio City Hall, Riotur and Vision, which will take care of the fireworks, said that all details of the party will be released on Wednesday, which includes, from traffic blocks, to the announcement of attractions and fireworks time.
