Gaza’s Hamas-controlled Ministry of Health has suspended cooperation with the World Health Organization, which was helping to facilitate evacuations of patients and staff from Al-Shifa Hospital in northern Gaza, according to a ministry spokesman. .

The announcement came after reports that the hospital director had been arrested by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) while leaving the site as part of a WHO convoy.

Ministry spokesman Ashraf Al-Qidra said a WHO convoy from Al-Shifa in the north of the territory was stopped for several hours on Wednesday in an operation at a checkpoint in central Gaza. .

Several doctors were arrested, including Mohammed Abu Salmiya, the director of Al-Shifa.

“The United Nations bears full responsibility for this event and we await appropriate and urgent measures on its part to resolve this,” the Hamas ministry said.

“The Ministry of Health decides to stop full coordination with the World Health Organization on the issue of the exit of the injured and remaining medical teams until a report is sent explaining what happened and the detainees are released,” he added.
