After being attacked by pitbulls, Roseana Murray launches book “The Magic Arm”

Four months after being attacked by pitbulls while walking along Saquarema beach in Rio de Janeiro, the writer Roseana Murray 73, transformed her own pain into poetry and launched, last Saturday (10), the book “The Magic Arm” which reflects the lived experience.

Due to the many bites she received, the poet had her right arm and one ear amputated. While she was hospitalized in the ICU of a public hospital, the author decided to bring to life the character in her story: a 73-year-old woman, a grandmother and owner of red hair, just like her.

With illustrations by Fernando Zensho the launch of the book gathered a large audience at Janela Livraria in Shopping Gávea. “A lot of good things on the horizon”, celebrated Murray on social media.

Remember the case

Murray was attacked by dogs on April 5. The accident occurred on Avenida Ministro Salgado Filho, in Saquarema, the city where she lives. She was rescued by the Fire Department and taken by helicopter to the hospital in São Gonçalo.

The three people responsible for taking care of the dogs that attacked the writer were arrested on the same day of the accident for the crime of animal cruelty. They will also be charged with failure to take proper care of animals and bodily harm. On the 11th of the same month, the court granted the trio freedom.

Born in Botafogo, in the southern part of Rio de Janeiro, Roseana Murray is the daughter of Polish immigrants. With a degree in French literature, she has received the award for Best Poetry from the National Foundation for Children’s and Young Adult Books four times. In total, the author has published over 100 books of short stories and poems for all ages.
