The singer and businesswoman Black Gil revealed that during treatment for colorectal cancer, needed to forgive himself for his bad eating habits that she cultivated throughout her life. In an interview with Conversa com Bial, on TV Globo, she explained that felt guilty about the fact that the tumor she was treating had appeared in her intestine .
She revealed that she heard from the medical team conducting her treatment that they also cared for patients who ate well, exercised and had the same tumor as her.
“All my doctors told me: don’t blame yourself, we work here with extremely healthy people, people who have a good diet, have exercised their whole lives and have the same tumor as you. I had this moment of [fazer as] peace with myself, but I still believe that we have to always be alert to our health”, she declared in the interview that aired on Tuesday (27).
In the conversation, the 50-year-old singer recalled growing up in the 1980s, when fast food restaurants were just beginning to arrive in Brazil. She was born in a house that she classified as “natural”, and lived with the macrobiotic habits of her father, Gilberto Gil, and was dazzled by the novelty.
“I couldn’t drink soda at home, but a snack bar opened next to my school. I would save up my pocket money because I wanted to wait in line at the snack bar,” she said. “This snack bar had a promotion where if you said the ingredients of the sandwich really fast, you would get it for free. I was the fastest of them all, I got a snack every day and ate it without my parents knowing.”
Presenter Pedro Bial, who conducted the interview, brought to the conversation an excerpt from the singer’s new book, “Preta Gil: The first 50 “, in which she reflects on empowerment and the need to maintain healthy habits, even if her body does not fit the standards established by society.
“I always say that empowerment has to be extremely responsible. Loving your non-standard body cannot be associated with not taking care of your health. If you really love yourself, you take care of yourself. I thought I loved myself, but I discovered that I didn’t. And this subject is extremely sensitive for me,” Bial read.
“We can love ourselves the way we are, but we have to understand if that body is healthy. Today I am a healthy woman, I take care of myself, and I take care of myself outside of the norm. I am not a thin woman,” Preta concluded.
