Fruits, tubers and electricity: these were the main products responsible for the deceleration of the inflation preview in the month of May. Most of the in natura foodstuffs, which had been accumulating consecutive increases in prices in recent months, showed deflation, that is, a negative change.
According to a survey of CNN based on prices collected by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), in the last twelve months, the categories of tubers, roots and vegetables and fruits have already grown, respectively, 54.92% and 19.84%.
But in May, both categories had a decline – 0.42% for vegetables and -2.47% for fruits.
Among tubers, in the IPCA-15 this month, the main drops were zucchini (-6.31%), cucumber (-6.27%), tomato (-11%), carrot (-16.19%) and sweet potato (-2.03%). In the case of fruits, papaya (-12.88%), watermelon (-11.67%), guava (-6.64%), tangerine (-6.65%) and bay orange (-5.44% ) caused the deflation observed in the category.
Electricity, on the other hand, registered a price drop of 14.09%, which brought down the previous inflation rate for the housing group, which stood at -3.85%.
According to economist Alberto Ajzental, a professor at the Getúlio Vargas Foundation (FGV), the person responsible for the reduction in electricity is the end of the water scarcity banner, which ended in April. The item “electricity”, in the IBGE price survey, represents 4.91% of the index, and helped to slow down inflation.
In the case of food, for the economist, the tendency is for the cost to start to retreat, as the climatic and seasonal difficulties, responsible for the rise in prices, are beginning to be resolved.
“Most prices are not yet having an inversion, but it is already possible to observe a deflation in important items, which came from consecutive highs”, he says.
According to the IBGE, the subgroup of tubers, roots and vegetables has a weight of 0.99% in the index, while the price of fruits represents 1.02% of the IPCA-15. With this, it is possible to say that about 9.2% of the survey prices were negative.
The IPCA-15 in May was 0.59%, compared to 1.75% in April.
