President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) reinforced this Wednesday (25) that there is no “military solution” to the war in Ukraine.
“There needs to be a diplomatic solution and that is why Brazil has insisted on peace,” commented the president, after saying that the war “would not even have needed to start.”
The speech comes after criticism from Volodymyr Zelensky, Ukrainian president, during a speech at the UN General Assembly regarding Brazil and China’s plan to end the conflict.
“The war has been going on for almost 3 years and it seems to me that there is nothing planned for negotiations. Celso Amorim has already been to China, Russia and Ukraine at my request to try to discuss whether there is a way for us to make a peace proposal,” he commented.
“There is a proposal from China that has been praised even by Brazil and we want to know if the two countries are interested in talking,” he added.
The Brazilian president admitted that the work towards an agreement is not easy, but highlighted that it is necessary to find a “common denominator” between Russia and Ukraine.
Lula also addressed the crisis in the Middle East, highlighting that the situation in Israel, the Gaza Strip and Lebanon “is unprecedented”.
