The profile of the French newspaper Le Monde on Instagram, was invaded by Brazilians after a negative review about the film “I’m Still Here” which received only one star and Fernanda Torres’ performance was considered “monochord” .
In response, Brazilian internet users flooded several of the newspaper’s posts with critical comments, regardless of the topic covered.
“Cheese bread is better than a croissant”, joked one internet user. “You are jealous of Brazilian cinema,” said another. “We may be poor, third world, but we are millions and we love the internet! They messed with the wrong country!” said another.
Although “I’m Still Here” is a public and critical phenomenon in Brazil, its reception in France has been different. In Emmanuel Macron’s country, the film premiered last Wednesday (15) with the title “Je Suis Toujours There“ .
For the essayist, one of the film’s main flaws is the performance of Fernanda Torres, who won the Golden Globe for Best Actress. He criticized the “excessive melodramatic load” of the character Eunice Paiva, which, according to him, would make the film “treat the understanding of the totalitarian mechanism in a very shallow way”.
Furthermore, Mandelbaum considers Fernanda Torres’ performance to be “somewhat monotonous”, something that can be classified as a one-dimensional performance, without variations and excessively repetitive .
According to the critic, the character Eunice in Salles’ film presents a representation of suffering that borders on excessive religiosity, something reminiscent of Sônia Braga’s performance in “Aquarius” (2016).
