The Prosecutor’s Office of the Public Prosecution Service of São Paulo (MP-SP) established on Wednesday, 7, a civil inquiry to verify safety on line 5-lilac subway, operated by viamobility.
The action occurs after a passenger dies while being stuck between the automatic doors of the Campo Limpo station platform and the train.
The concessionaire of the line says that Lourivaldo Ferreira da Silva Nepomuceno, 35, exceeded the visual and sound notices of closing of the doors. Viamobility also claims that it is providing more security resources.
The case is investigated by the Civil Police as “suspected death.” Witnesses give testimony and investigators await the outcome of expert reports.
The São Paulo State Court of Auditors (TCESP) also charged explanations from the concessionaire and the State Government about the death of Lourivaldo.
In the document, issued by Counselor Dimas Ramalho on Wednesday, was determined a period of five days for the viaebility and the Tarcisio de Freitas (Republican) management to clarify.
The concessionaire will have to send a report with information about the circumstances of the accident, measures adopted after the occurrence and support provided to the victim’s family. It should also clarify the investments made in security and the history of previous accidents. To the State Government, the rapporteur calls for data on the contractual and legal measures adopted due to the occurrence.
What the government says
In a statement, Tarcisio management provided “condolences to the victim’s family” and said he acts “constantly with dealers to optimize passenger safety”.
“In addition, the São Paulo State Transport Agency (Artesp) opened a sanctioning procedure to investigate the case.” If failed operation is proven, sanctions will be applied to the concessionaire.
What the viamobility says
The viamobility claims that passenger tried to enter the wagon after all the visual and sound alarms and ended up being trapped in the space between the train doors and the platform.
“Line 5-Lilac has a nationally used system of doors obstruction sensors to prevent trains from part of the doors open. In the case in question, even after the visual and sound alarms, when trying to enter the wagon, the passenger ended up in space between the train and the platform, where there are no platform doors and the wagon, the train broke”, the train says the dealership.
Sensors in the spans between the doors
After Lourivaldo’s death, the viamobility said it will install sensors on the spans between the platform and train doors, as well as implement physical barriers, with metal rods, to prevent the platform door to close with people in the span.
“This technology (of sensor in the span) is very recent and its use in the world is still an exception, and the dealership is one of the pioneers in adopting this type of solution. Its installation involves a series of technical issues and tests, which is why its implementation is not immediate. In line 5-lilac, the schedule predicts it in the first trimester of 2026, which can be anticipated according to the results of the tests,” says the concessionaire.
This type of sensor has already been installed by the São Paulo Metropolitan Company (subway) in line 3-red, according to Luis Kolle, a subway engineer and president of the Association of Engineer and Metro Architects (AEamesp). “They have to be of high reliability not to disrupt the system operation. They cannot interrupt the train starting with any detection. It has to be accurate and reliable,” Kolle told the Estadão.
