Voters and lawmakers are reacting to the presidential debate between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump, as the race between the two remains tight.
The two candidates met for the second time this week at an event marking the 23rd anniversary of the September 11 attacks on Wednesday morning (11).

September 11th Events
President Joe Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, former President Trump and Trump’s running mate J.D. Vance attended the 9/11 Memorial in New York City, where they attended a ceremony at Ground Zero. Trump and Harris greeted each other upon arrival. Trump and Vance also visited a fire station, where they met with firefighters. Minnesota Governor Tim Walz attended a day of remembrance for the terrorist attacks in Minnesota. Biden also attended an event in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. An image of Biden wearing a Trump campaign hat went viral.
Early Voting in the US
Voters will soon begin casting their ballots in the 2024 presidential election, with in-person early voting beginning in several states later this month. The first votes are already being mailed out in some places. Alabama began mailing out mail-in ballots to those who requested them today. Most states won’t offer mail-in ballots until later in September or October. The next date on the calendar is September 19, when ballots are expected to be available in the key swing state of Wisconsin.
Will there be another debate?
A senior campaign official for Harris, Quentin Fulks, declined to comment on whether the vice president would agree to a second presidential debate on Sept. 25, but said he believes the vice president “would be open to a debate in October.” Senior Trump campaign adviser Jason Miller said the former president has already agreed to a Sept. 25 debate and attacked Harris for “throwing up a fictitious day in October.” However, Trump said Wednesday that he did not know whether he wanted to debate Harris again. He later said his team was still evaluating the possibility of another debate.
Next steps for the Democratic campaign
The vice president is now looking ahead to the final stretch leading up to Election Day. Despite her performance in the debate, Harris’s campaign is adamant that the debate did not alter the trajectory of the tight race. An aide said that from now until November, the campaign will continue to operate as if it were a 50-50 race between Trump and Harris. The campaign is working on ways to amplify Trump’s responses that they consider the most problematic.
Where will the candidates be in the coming days?
Kamala will attend two campaign rallies in Charlotte and Greensboro, North Carolina, on Thursday (12). Her running mate, Walz, will travel to Michigan to hold a campaign event in Grand Rapids. Trump will head to Arizona on Thursday, where he will deliver a speech in Tucson. The former president is also scheduled to attend a fundraising event on Friday (13), which will take place in Los Angeles, California.
