After defeat, Chilean politicians begin to articulate new constituent process

The presidents of the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies of Chile, Álvaro Elizalde and Raúl Soto, respectively, will convene political parties and social movements for a dialogue for a new constituent process.

This morning, representatives of the Legislative Branch met at La Moneda Palace with President Gabriel Boric to address the political scenario after the triumph of the Rejection option in the exit plebiscite.

In the instance, the president asked them “that a dialogue be developed in the National Congress that allows establishing an institutional path to advance in the constituent process”, said Elizalde.

“In this context, together with the president of the Chamber, this week we will convene all parties with parliamentary representation, the benches, and we will also listen to other social movements and representatives of civil society, with the aim of promoting a dialogue that allows us, as soon as possible, to possible, transmit a certainty to Chile: the institutional path to fulfill the commitment to move towards a Constitution that is a factor of unity among all Chileans”, he added.

“We hope to make rapid progress in this process, listening to different perspectives and proposals from different political parties, political parties, social movements and civil society organizations. We have to learn lessons from what happened and, above all, we have to fulfill the mandate that citizens have entrusted to us through an inclusive, inclusive dialogue,” he sentenced.

Soto: “We have a second chance”

In turn, deputy Soto stated that “we have a second chance, it will probably be the last and we cannot joke about it”.

“The time has come for the politics of agreements and to recover the capacity for understanding to get out of our ideological trenches (…), we must generate a consensus that allows us to chart a roadmap for constitutional change with a new body and a new constituent that leads us to a text that calls for the adhesion of the vast and immense majority of Chileans”, he indicated.
