After discussion of Trump and Zelensky, countries do not sign mineral agreement

Following a chattel occurred on Friday (28) between Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky, and United States Donald Trump, the two countries did not signed an agreement that predicted US mineral exploration on Ukrainian soil. Information on the non-signature of the agreement was given by White House sources to the Reuters agency.

According to this source, Trump did not rule out an agreement, but that should not occur until Ukraine “is ready to have a constructive conversation.” It depended on the Ukrainians if the leaders’ joint press conference could be rescheduled while Zelenskiy remained in the US, the official said.

The high US government official heard by Reuters added that it is up to Ukrainians to decide whether the press conference canceled on Friday could be rescheduled while Zelensky is in US territory.

Heated discussion

During the meeting that took place today, Zelensky criticized US governments for not having acted to prevent Russian President Vladimir Putin from the annexation of territories between 2014 and 2022.

Annoyed, Trump said the Ukrainian was betting on millions of lives and world war – and repeated that Zelensky has no cards for negotiation. US Vice President Jd Vance said Zelensky should be grateful to the US government and asked, “How many times have you said ‘thank you’ at this meeting?”

Minutes after the discussion, the presidents went to an internal meeting – and soon the press was warned that the press conference had been canceled. Trump has published a statement on social networks saying that Zelensky must come back when he wants peace.

Agreement for mineral exploration

Although it is often called the “rare land agreement”, the rare land is just a small part of this agreement. The main focus is the large reserves of other valuable minerals, including graphite, lithium, titanium, beryllium and uranium. Although not chemically classified as rare lands, they are among the 50 minerals that are seen as essential for future economic growth.

The importance for the US occurs because the country widely depends on imports for the minerals they need, many of which come from China.

Of the 50 minerals classified as critics, Americans are totally dependent on imports from 12 of them, and more than 50% dependent on 16 other, according to last year’s data from United States Geological Survey, a government agency.

Ukraine, meanwhile, has deposits of 22 of these 50 critical materials, according to its government. The US want to reduce China’s dependence – one of its main strategic rivals – both for rare lands and other minerals.
