After a morning of gunfire experienced by residents of the Mirante de Periperi neighborhood, in the suburbs of Salvador, one man died and another was shot, this Friday (12). In a statement, the Military and Civil Police confirmed what happened and said that the exchange of fire was between rival criminal groups in the region.
Residents report fear and factional warfare in the neighborhood. Just this week, another person was the victim of a stray bullet in the locality.
The police do not know whether the man who died was involved in the crime. The other person shot was taken to a health unit.
Faced with the feeling of insecurity, the Secretary of Public Security, Marcelo Werner, ordered reinforcement for an indefinite period in the fight against factions in Periperi, a peripheral region of the capital of Bahia. Vehicles and aircraft are used from the early hours of the day for patrolling.
To the CNN , the Municipal Department of Education (Smed) stated that the municipal school in the neighborhood suspended its activities and 365 students in the network were left without classes. Health units will also be closed this Friday and services will resume next Monday (15).
The cases are being investigated by the Civil Police. The SSP-BA reinforced that, in the first months of this year alone, 20 leaders of criminal organizations have already been reached by the state security forces, in addition to 17 rifles seized. The ministry also asks the population to help, in complete secrecy, by calling 181 (Disque Denúncia).
