After extinguishing fires, MS firefighters return to fighting fires in the Pantanal

A few days after the Mato Grosso do Sul Fire Department announced that active fires in the state’s Pantanal had been extinguished, military personnel returned this Thursday (23) to combat forest fires in the region.

Since November 4th, a forest fire has been raging in the Pantanal region on the Rio Negro. Last week, between the 16th and 17th, the flames reached their maximum level, reaching the Transpantaneira highway, the main access route to the Pantanal in Mato Grosso.

The rains recorded in Mato Grosso do Sul last Sunday (19) helped put out the fire. On the day, firefighters reported that satellite images did not indicate any fire outbreaks in the Pantanal.

“In many places this fire returned”, informs Corporal Marcos Rocha, from the Fire Department.

“Right now, I am with the teams in the Morro do Azeite region, in the Pantanal, close to the municipality of Miranda, with 13 military firefighters. Two teams from the Fire Department are working in this region during the day and night to combat some outbreaks near an inn,” said Rocha.

According to the cable, the origin of the new outbreaks is due to the heat wave that has hit the state in recent days. This Thursday, the forecast is that the maximum temperature will reach 35°C in some municipalities.

A CNN also contacted the Mato Grosso Fire Department to understand whether firefighting continues in the state, but did not receive any feedback until this report was published.

November broke record for fires

According to data from the Queimadas Program, from the National Institute for Space Research (Inpe), during the first 20 days of November, Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso do Sul together registered 3,957 hot spots. The number is around nine times higher than the average for the month over the last 25 years, which is 442 outbreaks.

In November alone, fire has already consumed more than 1.2 million hectares of the Pantanal. The value is three times higher than that recorded throughout 2022, according to the Environmental Satellite Applications Laboratory (Lasa), at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ).

Due to the fires, the governments of both states declared an emergency situation, in order to enable the federal government’s participation in the affected areas.
