The false theft of a BMW/330I in the Vila Nova neighborhood, in Porto Alegre (RS), triggered a major operation by the Civil Police of Rio Grande do Sul this Wednesday morning (26) in the capital of Rio Grande do Sul. Named Operation “Primeiro de Abril” – in reference to the date of the alleged occurrence and the date considered World April Fools’ Day – the action aimed to execute a search and seizure warrant at the residence of JM, suspected of committing fraud aimed at the receipt of compensation or insurance value.
During the investigations, the Vehicle Theft Repression Police Station – DRV/DEIC, found that the alleged victim of the theft, in reality, was the author of an attempted fraud against the car insurance company. Suspicions gained strength after collecting informal statements from the victim and images of the alleged location where the robbery had occurred. Contrary to what had been stated by the man, he left the house on foot and returned the same way.
According to the Civil Police of Rio Grande do Sul, this type of fraud against insurance companies has become increasingly common, being known as an “insurance scam”. It is estimated that, every month, between 5 and 10% of theft records are false. This problem causes a false increase in crime indicators, which has caused the PC/RS to act increasingly firmly to curb this type of action.
This type of scam occurs mainly with high-end vehicles that are difficult to negotiate in the used car buying and selling market. In these cases, some owners adopt this illicit solution to get rid of the insured property, including dismantling and selling car parts.
The man accused of the BMW scam is in prison for illegal possession of a firearm and is awaiting trial.
