After forgetting Elza Soares, Grammy honors Erasmo Carlos and Gal Costa

The Recording Academy, organizer of the Grammy Awards, remembered Brazilians Erasmo Carlos and Gal Costa during the awards this Sunday (5) by honoring the artists who died in 2022.

The moment comes a year after the Grammy forgot the “voice of the millennium” Elza Soares, who died in January last year and “ignored” in the 2022 edition of the award.

“Tremendão” was the first Brazilian to appear in this year’s “in memoriam”.

He appeared in an image on the screen, credited as “Brazilian singer and songwriter”, while a recording of guitarist David Crosby, who died in January of this year, was played.

Erasmo Carlos died in November last year, in a hospital in Rio de Janeiro, with an edemigenic syndrome.

Gal’s photo appeared prominently on the screen, credited as “Brazilian singer” while Sheryl Crowl, Bonnie Raitt and Mick Fleetwood sang “Songbird” in honor of Christine Mcvie, lead singer and keyboardist of Fleetwood Mac who died in November last year.

Gal also died in November last year, in São Paulo. The family did not disclose the cause of death.

The memory of these two icons of Brazilian music partially redeems the widely criticized absence on social networks of Elza Soares in the 2022 edition – although Marília Mendonça was remembered. Elza died of natural causes in January last year, months before music’s biggest award show.

Among the 2023 Grammy honors were singer and “Grease” star Olivia Newton-John, the only daughter of the king of rock Lisa Marie Presley, rapper Takeoff of the group MIGOS, as well as DJ Stephen “tWitch” Boss.
