After days of intense heat, the Rio Grande do Sul Civil Defense warns of the possibility of heavy rains throughout this week, especially in the south and central region of the state.
The heat wave that has hit the gaucho territory in recent days has caused inconvenience to the population. The high temperatures led to the start of classes in the state network, scheduled for last Monday (10), had to be postponed.
The State Civil Defense released on Tuesday (11) an alert to “punctually strong rain” accompanied by lightning, gusts of wind and eventual fall of hail. The alert covers, in particular, areas south and center; Campaign, Costa Doce and Valleys.
“If it is surprised by severe time, seek shelter. If you are at home, close well doors and windows. During the thunderstorms, remove the electronics from the socket. Shelter animals and keep them safe, ”warned the Civil Defense by means of a note.
Heat
In addition to rain, the state lives days, too, of high temperatures. On Monday, the city of Porto Alegre (RS) registered a new heat record for 2025, with thermometers reaching 37.9 ° C, according to the National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet). The previous record had been 37.6 ° C on February 4 this year.
The heat is the size that led the court to postpone the beginning of state classes, following a request from the Rio Grande do Sul State Teachers Center (CPERS).
The initial forecast was that the school year would start on Monday (10). If the decision is not revised, classes are expected to start on February 17.
The State Government has appealed the injunction, through the Attorney General’s Office, and now awaits a decision of the court, in order to define the exact date for the beginning of classes.
According to CPERS President Rosane Zan, the extreme heat, planned for the coming days, poses a serious risk to the health of educators and students. Rosane drew attention to the precarious structure of state schools.
“Most classrooms do not have air conditioning and, in many cases, not even enough fans to alleviate the heat,” said Rosane Zan. “Without appropriate conditions, teachers, staff and students would be forced to face an unhealthy environment, further aggravating health risks,” he added.
