After historic sequence, tennis player Bia Haddad falls in Wimbledon debut

The participation of Brazilian tennis player Bia Haddad in the singles bracket of the Wimbledon Tournament, in London (Great Britain), came to an end in the first round. This Monday (27), the 26-year-old from São Paulo, 28th in the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) ranking, lost to Slovenian Kaja Juvan (62nd) by two sets to one (4/6, 6/ 4 and 2/6), in an hour and 56 minutes of departure.

Bia arrived at Wimbledon packed with two titles won in WTA 250 tournaments (Birmingham and Nottingham) and a semi-final at Eastbourne’s WTA 500, all on British soil. The Brazilian had a streak of 12 straight wins, the longest in women’s grass tournaments since 2018, when American Serena Williams saw the end of a streak of 20 consecutive victories.

Despite the early elimination, the Brazilian should not be affected in the ranking, as this year’s edition of Wimbledon is not worth points. Both the WTA and the Association of Professional Tennis Players (ATP), which manages the men’s suit of the sport, took this decision due to the non-allowance, by the organizers of the competition, of the presence of players from Russia and Belarus, due to the Russian invasion. to Ukraine.

The paulista will still compete in the women’s doubles bracket (where she is 26th in the world ranking), alongside the Polish Magdalena Frech (92nd in singles, 191th in doubles). They debut this Wednesday (29), at a time to be defined, against Indian Sania Mirza (24th) and Czech Lucie Hradecka (20th).

Among men, the Brazilian representative in the singles bracket was also eliminated on Monday. Thiago Monteiro, from Ceará, 89th in the ATP ranking, could not resist the Spaniard Jaume Munar (71st), who won by three to zero (2/6, 4/6 and 5/7) in two hours and 13 minutes.

This Tuesday (28), who will be on the court for the women’s singles bracket is Laura Pigossi. The 27-year-old from São Paulo, number 124 in the world, will face Slovakian Kristina Kucova (90th). The match is scheduled to start at 12:15 (Brasilia time). It is the first time that the Brazilian, bronze in doubles at the Tokyo Olympics (Japan), last year, competes in the main phase of a Grand Slam (as the four main tennis tournaments in the world are known).
