The Rio de Janeiro City Hall reported that it obtained, on the morning of this Wednesday (31), authorization from the presidency of the Regional Federal Court of the 2nd Region (TRF-2) to carry out the auction of the Gasômetro land, the location where the future Flamengo stadium is to be built.
The auction was suspended yesterday afternoon (30) after a preliminary decision by the TRF-2, in which it was understood that the expropriation of the land would only be the responsibility of the Union, and not the City of Rio, as was done. However, the City Attorney’s Office managed to overturn the injunction.
“The auction, open to all interested parties and which aims to renew the urban area of the Port Zone, will take place today at 2:30 pm,” the municipal administration said in a statement.
On social media, Mayor Eduardo Paes (PSD) said that a discussion could be held about the value of the auction, but not about whether or not the city could expropriate. “And this is something absolutely normal in any expropriation process,” he wrote.
A CNN sought out Flamengo, who stated that they will not comment on what happened.
Anyone wishing to purchase the land must make a minimum bid of R$138.2 million and must build a sports arena on the site. Flamengo has already expressed interest in acquiring and building its stadium in the port area of Rio de Janeiro.
The Gasômetro land was acquired by the city government in 2012 and later transferred to the Porto Maravilha Real Estate Investment Fund, managed by Caixa Econômica Federal. The site, which has been deactivated since 2005, was used as a warehouse for manufactured gas.
The highest bidder will win the land and must build a “sports facility with the potential to generate a minimum flow” of 70,000 people. The project must be accompanied by an urban mobility plan that prioritizes the use of public transportation and pedestrian access in the vicinity.
The location should also promote urban integration with the surroundings, through coexistence with surrounding establishments, such as shops, bars, restaurants and museums.
