response to the pandemic
The screening room segment has been hit hard by the pandemic. Most Brazilian rooms remained inactive or operating with security measures that reduced capacity for a long period of time.
According to data from National Film Agency (Ancine) in 2020, the audience and income of cinemas fell by 77% compared to 2019. The following year, there was a recovery of 30% of the public and 40% of income, but the result is still far from the numbers of the last year in pre -pandemic.
Brazil ended the first year of the pandemic with 1,860 rooms in operation, spread over 466 complexes in operation. This number represents a reduction of 1,647 rooms compared to the data recorded at the end of 2019 – a drop of 47% and the lowest value in the series since 2003.
Currently, the Brazilian exhibition park has 3,249 screens – still 7% less than in 2019.
