The Venezuelan ambassador to Brazil, Manuel Vadell, who had been called for consultations by President Nicolás Maduro at the end of October, announced this Wednesday (13) that he is returning to Brasília.
In a video, recorded at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and posted on the Venezuelan embassy’s profile on the social network X, Vadell said he was “a few hours away” from returning to Brazil. The ambassador also stated that he was taking passports requested by Venezuelans residing in Brazil to Brasília.
Vadell’s announcement comes two days after Maduro praised a statement by Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, saying that the Brazilian made a “wise reflection” by stating that he cannot question the decision of the Venezuelan Supreme Court. The speech refers to the ratification, by the country’s Supreme Court of Justice, of the alleged victory of the Venezuelan president in the July 28 elections.
Vadell’s return signals Caracas’ willingness to normalize diplomatic relations between the countries. On October 30, Maduro’s representative was removed from the embassy for consultations, in a protest against what the Venezuelan government considered to be “recurrent interventionist and rude statements from spokespeople authorized by the Brazilian government”.
In a statement at the time, the Venezuelan Foreign Ministry specifically criticized President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s international advisor, Celso Amorim. In the text, the Venezuelan Ministry of Foreign Affairs also condemned Brazil’s veto on Venezuela’s entry into the BRICS, the bloc of emerging countries.
