After meeting with Netanyahu, Biden says the US will work with Israel to avoid “new tragedies”

United States President Joe Biden said he will continue his support for Israel in a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and members of the country’s war cabinet, in a meeting held in Tel Aviv this Wednesday (18) .

“We will continue to support Israel as long as you work to defend your people,” Biden told Netanyahu. “We will continue to work with you and partners across the region to prevent further tragedies for innocent civilians.”

Biden also called the terrorist attacks by the radical Islamic group Hamas “brutal, inhumane, almost unbelievable.” Netanyahu, in turn, criticized Hamas for committing “this terrible double war crime against humanity.”

“While Israel seeks to minimize civilian casualties, Hamas seeks to maximize civilian casualties,” Netanyahu said.

“Hamas wants to kill as many Israelis as possible and has no regard for Palestinian lives. Every day they commit a double war crime, targeting our civilians while hiding behind their civilians, incorporating themselves into the civilian population and using them as human shields,” he added.

The Israeli Prime Minister also addressed the bomb attack on a hospital in Gaza during the night of Tuesday (17), in which preliminary estimates indicate that hundreds of people were killed, according to the Ministry of Health of the Gaza Strip.

“We saw the cost of this terrible war crime yesterday, when a rocket fired by Palestinian terrorists misfired and landed in a Palestinian hospital,” Netanayahu said. “The whole world was rightly outraged. But this indignation should not be directed at Israel, but at the terrorists. As we move forward in this war, Israel will do everything it can to keep civilians out of harm’s way.”

Authorities in Gaza said Israel was behind the explosion, while the Israel Defense Forces said its intelligence showed a “rocket launch failure” by the Palestinian Islamic Jihad group was responsible.

This Wednesday (11), Biden briefly addressed the hospital attack during a meeting with Netanyahu, telling the Israeli prime minister that “it looks like it was done by the other team.”
