After Nasrallah’s death, tension grows with attack on Beirut and sirens in Tel Aviv

One day after the Israeli bombing of Beirut that caused the death of the Hezbollah leader, new episodes of violence increase concerns about an open war between the Lebanese group and Israel. This Saturday (28), Israel carried out a new attack on the Lebanese capital, a team from the CNN on site.

Smoke could be seen rising from the city’s southern suburbs. The Israel Defense Forces said it carried out a “precise” attack on the southern neighborhood of Dahiyeh.

The Houthis, who operate in Yemen and are allies of Hezbollah within the Axis of Resistance led by Iran, fired a missile at Tel Aviv, which was shot down in the air.

As a consequence of the escalation of the crisis, the Israeli government banned gatherings of more than a thousand people for the next two days.

The expectation is that there will be no response from Hezbollah for the next 72 hours, which will likely be used to assess which commanders are still alive and how safe it is to communicate and meet.

THE CNN was unable to confirm the extent to which the group’s rocket inventory had been destroyed by the wave of Israeli airstrikes over the past two weeks.

USA speaks out

US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin said on Friday (27) that the United States is determined to protect Israel against Iran and its allied groups, expressing “full support” for Israel’s right to defend itself, during two links with Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant.

According to a statement, the two spoke following the increase in Israeli airstrikes in Lebanon this week, which killed Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah.

Austin said the United States is committed to the defense of Israel and will remain in the region to protect U.S. forces and facilities. Austin also reiterated that the US will prevent Iran and other partners or proxies from exploiting the situation in Lebanon or expanding the conflict.

Understand the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah

Israel has launched a series of airstrikes on areas of Lebanon in recent days.

On Monday (23), the country had its deadliest day since the 2006 war, with more than 500 fatalities.

According to the Israeli military, the targets are members and military infrastructure of Hezbollah, one of the most powerful paramilitary forces in the Middle East and supported by Iran.

The offensive reached several points in Lebanon, including the country’s capital, Beirut. Thousands of people sought refuge in shelters and left cities in the south of the country.

Furthermore, a ground incursion has not been ruled out. Hezbollah and Israel began exchanging attacks after the start of the war in the Gaza Strip. The Lebanese group is an ally of Hamas, which invaded Israeli territory on October 7, 2023, killing hundreds of people and capturing hostages.

Due to the bombings, thousands of residents of northern Israel, where the border with Lebanon is located, had to be displaced. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has promised several times to return these citizens to their homes.

On September 17, Israel added the return of these residents as an official war objective.

At least two Brazilian teenagers died in the attacks. Itamaraty condemned the situation and called for an end to hostilities. The Brazilian government is also evaluating a possible rescue mission.
