After Natal, increase in Covid cases got out of control, says Mayor of Amparo

The city of Amparo, in the interior of São Paulo, is experiencing a new increase in Covid-19 cases and the city hall decided to adopt restrictive measures again.

In an interview with CNN Rádio, Mayor Carlos Alberto Martins explained the situation: “After Christmas, the business got out of control, overnight, we had many people looking for care with the flu syndrome.”

“Of the tests, 30% were positive for Covid. We had 2 or 3 cases a day and we hit more than 70. It was a 6,400% increase in infection. It was an avalanche”, he added.

On Thursday (6), there were 118 cases, the highest number even at the worst moment of the pandemic, in May of last year.

Although he assesses that the vaccination has ensured that hospitalizations do not follow the rate of the advance of cases, the mayor, who is with Covid and is in isolation until next Sunday, says the situation is worrying. “We had zero patients in the Intensive Care Unit, but today we have 40% of beds occupied in the covid ICU.”

Carlos Alberto recalled that the structure, at the moment, is different, since the field hospital was deactivated in August because it was expensive and no longer had so much demand.

Among the restriction measures, which run at least until January 31, bars and restaurants will only be open until 10 pm.

Events such as parties and get-togethers are also prohibited, as they generate crowds.
