After Netflix, Disney+ plans to limit password sharing

Disney should follow in Netflix’s footsteps and implement measures to limit password sharing on the Disney+ platform. In May, Netflix announced a ban on sharing passwords between people who don’t live in the same household.

For Variety, Bob Iger, CEO of Disney, said that the streaming platform is looking at measures that limit the sharing of Disney+ accounts. According to Bob, these limitations are a chance to help grow the brand’s streaming service.

“We are actively exploring ways to handle account sharing, and looking at the best ways to allow our subscribers to only share accounts with friends and family,” he explained.

Without giving details, Iger announced that this will be a strategy designed for the end of this year and that it should come into force next year. “At the end of this year, we will update our agreements with additional terms and policies around password sharing. In 2024 we will reveal our tactics for monetization”, he explained.

How it works on Netflix

In May, Netflix expanded its crackdown on password sharing to Brazil and more than 100 other countries, warning users that their accounts cannot be freely shared with people outside their homes.

The video streaming company announced that it is emailing customers in 103 countries and territories, including the United States, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Australia, Singapore, Mexico and Brazil. The move is part of a long-planned strategy to limit account sharing.

To share an account with someone outside the family, the user can transfer a profile to a new paid membership or add an extra member to the account for an additional monthly fee of $7.99. In Brazil, the value is R$ 12.90.
