After North Korea fires missile, Japan issues warning to residents

North Korea fired a missile at local time on Thursday, the governments of South Korea and Japan said, prompting a warning for some Japanese residents to take cover.

Japan warned residents on the northern end of the main island of Hokkaido to take cover immediately, saying a missile was likely to land near the island around 8am Japan time (8pm GMT).

But the Japanese government lifted an evacuation order for residents, saying an emergency warning system had mistakenly predicted the missile would land near the island.

The ballistic missile was launched off the east coast of the Korean peninsula, South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said.

The launch comes two days after North Korean state media outlet KCNA reported that leader Kim Jong Un called for strengthening the country’s war deterrence in a “more practical and offensive” way to counter what it called moves of aggression. from United States.

North Koreans have criticized the recent series of joint military exercises between the US and South Korea as rising tensions, stepping up their weapons tests in recent months.
