Singer SZA, 35, returned to the top of the main album chart in the United States with the album “SOS” after releasing, on December 20, the long-awaited deluxe version of the album called “Lana”. The information was confirmed in this week’s Billboard 200 update.
Despite being a new album, for chart and number counting purposes, “Lana” will be under the “SOS” umbrella, as will the original version released in December 2022 and the first deluxe released in February 2023.
With the equivalent of 180,000 units sold, SZA returned the album to the top of the chart after 22 weeks since the last time it held the position. This is the longest number of weeks it has taken for an album to return to the top position since the beginning of the Billboard 200. In total, “SOS” has already led the ranking for 11 non-consecutive weeks.
If it had been released alone, “Lana” would have topped the main US album chart by itself, as its 15 new songs recorded the equivalent of 105,000 units sold. “Christmas” by Michael Bublé, which came in second place, only reached 100,000.
SZA has been promising this release since September 2023, when she announced that “Lana” would be the name of the project. The album was also followed by the release of “Saturn”, which arrived on digital platforms at the end of February and was played live during the North American show at Lollapalooza. The new album also features a new collaboration with Kendrick Lamar, the singer’s longtime musical partner, on “30 For 30”.
“SOS” in itself was already a highly awarded album. Thanks to him, SZA was the most nominated artist at this year’s Grammy Awards. She competed in nine categories and took home three awards: Best Progressive R&B Album, Best R&B Song (“Snooze”) and Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group (“Ghost In The Machine”, with Phoebe Bridgers).
“Saturn”, in turn, competes for two awards in next year’s edition of the main music awards: Best R&B Song and Best R&B Performance.
