Isabel Torresactress and icon of the Spanish trans community, died this Friday (11), at the age of 52. The star had been battling lung cancer for years.
The announcement of the death took place through Isabel’s social networks. “While her family and friends deeply miss her, we know that wherever she goes, she will enjoy herself the way she knows how. Thank you for all the expressions of affection and concern”, reads the statement released on the actress’s Instagram.
Isabel has been a celebrated figure in the LGBTQ community for decades. In 1996, she became the first transgender woman to have her gender and social name recognized on a Canary Island identity document. As a television presenter, she was known for her social and political activism.
In 2020, she starred in the series “Veneno”, a biography of the trans singer Cristina Ortiz Rodríguez. The production, distributed internationally by HBO Max, catapulted Isabel to international success for the first time.
In November 2011, Isabel shared a video on her Instagram in which she reported the difficulties of treating cancer, diagnosed two years ago. Upon announcing the discovery of bone metastases, she revealed that she had only two months to live.
“I’ve been very sick and this is the last video I’m going to make,” he says in the post. “It was a pleasure to meet you, to be with you, and to live this beautiful experience called life”, he said goodbye.
