President Vladimir Putin has sought proposals from his armed forces commanders on how they think Russia’s military campaign in Ukraine should proceed, during a visit to the operation’s headquarters, the Kremlin said on Saturday.
A series of defeats in 10 months of fighting, resulting in Russia withdrawing from areas around the capital Kiev and Ukraine’s second-largest city Kharkiv, and more recently Kherson, have forced Putin to call up reservists and sparked rare public criticism from the military. and some allies.
Since the October appointment of Air Force General Sergei Surovikin to lead the campaign, Russian ground forces have focused more on defense than offense, while air strikes have left millions of Ukrainian civilians without heat, light or water for days as the winter sets in.
In video footage released by the Kremlin, Putin chaired a meeting of about a dozen people, including Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu and Chief of Staff Valery Gerasimov – both of whom were heavily criticized.
Putin was shown at the head of another table asking for suggestions from a series of military commanders.
“We will listen to commanders in each operational direction and would like to hear their proposals on our immediate and medium-term actions,” Putin said.
