After the heat wave, the South and Southeast must face a cold front

After going through a strong heat wave in recent weeks, the South and Southeast regions should face a cold front starting this Friday (28). According to forecasts by Climatempo, a new South Atlantic Convergence Zone (SACZ) begins to organize itself over Brazil.

The drop in temperatures will break the atmospheric blockage caused by a strong mass of warm air that has settled over central South America since mid-January. As a result, the heat should gradually subside over the next few days.

It was this hot air mass that boosted the heat wave seen in the southern Brazilian states. This Wednesday (26), for the first time in two weeks, Rio Grande do Sul did not record temperatures equal to or greater than 40ºC.

On Saturday (29), a cold front will settle on the coast of São Paulo due to a low pressure system. In the states of São Paulo, Paraná, Rio de Janeiro, central-south of Minas Gerais and Mato Grosso do Sul, cloudier days are expected with frequent rain and large volumes accumulated during the weekend.

In the Federal District and in 17 capitals there is a risk of rain. They are: Porto Alegre (RS), Florianópolis (SC), Curitiba (PR), São Paulo (SP), Rio de Janeiro (RJ), Belo Horizonte (MG), Goiânia (GO), Campo Grande (MS), Cuiabá (MT), Fortaleza (CE), Teresina (PI), São Luís (MA), Palmas (TO), Belém (PA), Macapá (AP), Manaus (AM) and Porto Velho (RO).

In addition, a large cloud of hot and humid air has been spreading across the country. Therefore, there is the possibility of the formation of a large amount of heavy clouds, which have the potential to cause heavy rains in all Brazilian states.

With the high volume of rain forecast, Climatempo warned of the risk of disturbances such as falling trees, overflowing streams and rivers, landslides and flooding.

In São Paulo, there is a forecast of large volumes of accumulated rain, which can vary from 150 to 250 millimeters in most areas of the state – including the capital. The forecast of heavy rains extends to the areas closest to Paraná and Baixada Santista, where the accumulated volume can reach close to 300 millimeters.

At the beginning of the month, the rains caused great damage in several states, such as Minas Gerais, Bahia and Rio de Janeiro. In Minas, as of January 12, the storms had caused at least 24 deaths, in addition to causing around 29,000 people to leave their homes.
