After the meeting, São Paulo decides to cancel the street carnival

After meeting this Thursday (6), the city of São Paulo decided to cancel the street Carnival this year. The measure was adopted due to the growth of Covid-19 cases. So far, the school parades at the Anhembi sambódromo are maintained.

The city of São Paulo will also formulate a strict protocol with measures to combat the spread of the virus during the period.

In addition to São Paulo, 12 other capitals canceled the street Carnival: Campo Grande, Cuiabá, Teresina, Belém, Fortaleza, Salvador, Rio de Janeiro, Florianópolis and Curitiba, São Luís, Recife and Maceió.

Mayor Ricardo Nunes explained the decision: “The epidemiological scenario indicates that in the city of São Paulo we would have to cancel the street Carnival and there was a proposal to carry out a controlled Carnival with a vaccine passport in large and open environments, such as the racecourse (from Interlagos), which was also suggested by the surveillance… This possibility was discarded. The city’s decisions are based on science and respect for Health technicians”.

Rio de Janeiro also canceled street parades. The announcement was made in the early evening of Tuesday (4) by Mayor Eduardo Paes (PSD). The parades of schools in Sapucaí were also maintained.

Blocks give up in São Paulo

Before the decision of the city hall to cancel the street Carnival, the blocks of São Paulo released a manifesto, on Wednesday (5), already giving up on the parades. The entities claim that they were not included by the government in discussions to organize the party.

“We are very sorry that we did not have the opportunity to contribute to public actions with our ‘diffuse expertise’, who know how many street carnivals there are within the São Paulo Carnival, and how to make each niche be served”, says the text signed by the Forum of SP blocks, Union of Street Carnival Blocks of the State of São Paulo (UBCRESP) and the São Paulo Women’s Carnival Committee.
