After the S-300, Slovakia is considering sending a MiG-29 to Ukraine

Slovakia will consider supplying Soviet-made MiG-29 fighter jets to Ukraine if an alternative to protecting its own airspace can be found, Prime Minister Edward Heger said on Monday.

Ukraine has demanded heavy weapons and aircraft as part of its defense against Russia.

Western nations have increasingly begun supplying weapons, but previous talks on supplying MiG-29s – also used by Poland and Bulgaria – have stalled because those plans were seen as too dangerous to escalate tensions between Russia and NATO.

Slovakia has 12 MiG-29 aircraft and has already provided Ukraine with the Soviet-designed S-300 air defense system.

“After what the Russian Federation has done now, Soviet equipment is becoming very dangerous. Therefore, your question is being taken into account,” Heger told a reporter when asked if he was asking allies to help secure Slovak airspace and the possibility of delivering MiG-29 to Ukraine.

“Post-Soviet equipment is not viable without Russian supplies and at the moment we do not even want them,” he said.

Heger said the Department of Defense is in discussions about airspace security with warplanes.
