Named Joca, the sea lion that rested for two days on the sand of Ipanema Beach, in the south of Rio de Janeiro, returned to the sea late this Friday morning (20).
The person who recorded the moment was veterinarian Yasmin Daoualibi, from the Santos Basin Beach Monitoring Project (PMP-BS), one of those responsible for caring for the animal.
“Today, December 20, 2024, at 11:28 am, he returned to the sea. We are awaiting further news and will remain here for a possible return. But, it seems, he returned to his home” explained Yasmin.
In the video posted on the internet, it is possible to see Joca’s moment of farewell. The fur seal moves towards the sea and, shortly after, the waves end up pulling it into the ocean.
During his stay in Ipanema, Joca received visits from agents from the Environmental Police, the Rio Environmental Guard, the Fire Department, the PMP-BS, tourists and other curious people. Charismatic, he became a tourist attraction.
In an interview with CNN professor Dirceu Lopes, a master’s student at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), explained that Joca’s arrival on the Brazilian coast was mainly due to the animal’s search for food and favorable conditions for mating.
