After two months of decline, household consumption intentions advance in January, says CNC

Household consumption intentions reached 76.2 points in January, the highest level since May 2020 (81.7 points). Seasonally adjusted, the monthly increase of 1.1% came after two months of retraction.

The indicator was revealed by a survey by the National Confederation of Trade in Goods, Services and Tourism (CNC), released this Monday (31). This index considers indicators such as income, employment, consumption, access to credit and professional perspective.

January 2022 was also better than 2021, which had 73.6 points. Despite the improvement, the index of 76.2 points remains below the satisfaction level, which is above 100 points. This has not happened since April 2015, when the mark of 102.99 points was reached.

Employment was the main reason for this result. The survey shows that this indicator grew by 2.6% in the month and reached 97 points. In the assessment of the economist at Fundação Getúlio Vargas (FGV), Renan Pieri, the results for the first month of 2022 still do not represent a trend for the year.

“On the one hand, the outlook is better, employment is enough to improve consumption intentions, but the downside is that income has decreased. This generates some caution for the level of consumption in 2022. Due to income and the low perspective of economic growth for the year, there should not be significant improvements”, explained the economist.

The survey evaluations in relation to the Current Income indicator showed that most families considered their income level to be the same as last year, with a percentage of 41.4%. The rate of people who considered that their current income is worse is 37.7%.

The portion that saw an improvement in their earnings went from 19.5% in December to 20.4% this month, the highest percentage since June 2020 (21.9%). Gains both for families with incomes below 10 minimum wages and for those earning above this amount increased by 1.1% and 1% in January, respectively.

Most families (54.1%) considered that the level of consumption in January was lower than last year. Only 15.4% noticed an increase in consumption. The consumption perspective is also not the most optimistic. About 47% believe they will have a lower consumption in the next three months.

In the regional analysis, families in the South were the most confident, with 85.8 points. The North, on the other hand, ranked as the least confident, with 58.7 points.
