After wave of attacks, Federal Police reinforces corporation in Rio de Janeiro

The leadership of the Federal Police, in Brasília, decided to increase its personnel in the fight against organized crime in Rio de Janeiro, according to the CNN . Twenty agents will be deployed to reinforce the corporation in the state.

The decision comes as a response to the latest militia attacks in the capital of Rio de Janeiro with the vandalism of buses during the early hours of the morning.

The PF leadership had previously deployed personnel to the state to assist the local superintendence with investigations into trafficking and militias – among them, the execution of three doctors in the west zone of Rio.

Under reservation, PF sources complain about the inaction of the state governor, Claudio Castro (PL) and refer to the situation as a “complete debacle” and cite as an example the absence of a security secretariat to coordinate actions.

Rio de Janeiro’s security secretariat was abolished in 2019 by decision of then-governor Wilson Witzel, who decided to divide the body’s functions between the secretariats of the Military Police and the Civil Police. The PF complains about lack of coordination in the work of the respective secretariats.

Last week, after 15 days in office, the then Secretary of Civil Police, delegate José Renato Torres left his role under protest due to political interference. Castro has already appointed four different names to the secretariat.
