After winning Oscar, “No Rhythm of the Heart” is re-released in Brazilian cinemas

The golden statuettes were delivered last Sunday (27), but the Oscars continue to resound here. The film “No Rhythm of the Heart”, by Sian Heder, returns to theaters this Thursday (31), distributed by Diamond Filmes.

After a timid release on the big screen in September 2021, a time when there were at least no Oscar nominees, the feature will now be released in 80 theaters across the country.

Municipalities such as São Luís (MA), Rio de Janeiro (RJ), Florianópolis (SC) and 25 other cities will screen the film which, in addition to winning the Oscar for Best Picture, won the Best Supporting Actor and Best Adapted Screenplay awards.

“Rhythm of the Heart” tells the story of Ruby (Emilia Jones), a 17-year-old teenager who is the only hearing person in a family of deaf people. Her father Frank (Troy Kotsur) and her brother Leo (Daniel Durant) work on a fishing boat and Ruby helps them, acting as an interpreter for both.

However, the teenager has other plans, she spends her days on the boat singing and wants to pursue this career. She ends up joining the school’s choir, where she will have to learn to live with a demanding teacher and an indecisive crush. While rehearsing her songs, her parents face serious financial problems, and Ruby will have to decide whether to go to college or help her family.

Best movie?

We are entering a post-pandemic world. After so much suffering, so many losses, and the mourning caused by Covid-19, it was natural for the cinephile audience to be interested in films with a lighter astral.

Aligning this with a strong Apple TV+ campaign in the final stretch before the Oscars, the Academy gave three statuettes to “The Rhythm of the Heart”: Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor and Best Adapted Screenplay, that is, the feature won in all categories. who competed

Films involving characters with disabilities are nothing new when it comes to Oscar nominations: “Rain Man”, “The Piano” and the recent “O Som do Metal” are some examples. However, the biggest asset of “No Rhythm of the Heart” is hiring deaf actors for the roles.

About half of the film is spoken in American Sign Language, with the possibility of subtitles on streaming. Marlee Matlin, who plays Ruby’s mother, is the only deaf actress to win the Oscar for Best Actress (for the 1986 film Children of Silence), while Troy Kotsur won his first statuette this year.

In fact, it’s the performances that make the film interesting. The feature has a well-defined beginning, middle and end, but the story is predictable and the soundtrack tries to stick to the viewer’s head at all times, with the theme song being repeated in every possible way: in a studio version, at chapel and even “in silence”. The film works like a musical but without the structure of one.

There is debate around whether it was fair for “The Rhythm of the Heart” to win the Oscar for Best Picture. Within that category, there were, yes, more daring, original and dense films, but the Academy preferred the high spirits this time.

remake

The film won the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay. But adapted from what? From another movie.

“The Bélier Family,” by director Eric Lartigau, was released in 2014 and tells exactly the same story as this year’s Oscar winner, with minor differences. The biggest one being the genre of the long.

The original version is an unpretentious and more dynamic comedy than its American version. The performances are not as good as the performances of the remake, especially the lead actress, but not having a melodramatic focus, it makes for a lighter film than its twin.

The work “No Rhythm of the Heart” won the top prize of the night two years after “Parasite”, a South Korean film, won the same statuette and three more categories. No remake needed, just subtitles.

Director Bong Joon-Ho’s statement when accepting his 2020 award remains current: “Once the American audience overcomes the two-centimeter-high barrier of subtitles, you will be introduced to many amazing films.”

“No Ritmo do Coração” is available on Prime Video and in cinemas in the cities: Maceió (AL), Manaus (AM), Salvador (BA), Fortaleza (CE), Brasília (DF), Goiânia (GO), São Luís ( MA), Belo Horizonte (MG), Belém (PA), Recife (PE), Teresina (PI), Curitiba and Londrina (PR), Niterói, Petrópolis and Rio de Janeiro (RJ), Natal (RN), Porto Alegre ( RS), Florianópolis and São José (SC), Barueri, Campinas, Indaiatuba, Jundiaí, Ribeirão Preto, São José dos Campos, São Paulo and Sorocaba (SP).

“The Bélier Family” is available on Telecine.
