Afternoon nap, the company that gives it to employees

Like a self-respecting mattress company, it knows the value of rest. Wakefit, which is based in Bangalore, South India, recognizes the right to nap to its workers. From 2 pm to 2.30 pm, all 677 employees can benefit from a break to regenerate and recover energy.
“Research shows that afternoon naps help with memory, concentration, creativity and productivity,” wrote Wakefit co-founder Chaitanya Ramalingegowda in an internal note announcing the initiative. Half an hour seems to be the right amount of time to improve mood and fight fatigue: a longer nap is likely to make workers more dazed and less productive.

“A NASA study reveals that a 26-minute nap can improve performance by 33%, while a Harvard study shows how naps prevent burnout,” the note continues. “Debates about afternoon naps have become the order of the day with the advent of smartworking, and companies are slowly but steadily realizing its importance. Through this initiative, thecompany hopes to start a sleep revolution by encouraging other companies to take the same initiative“. Wakefit explains: “We have always taken naps seriously, but starting today we will take things to the next level.”

A pioneering idea? Not really: twenty minute naps have been adopted for several years in several American companies (34% of companies already allowed them in 2008). Like Google, for example: the Mountain View giant, in 2010, installed some EnergyPods in its headquarters, expensive armchairs designed specifically to take a nap in the workplace. Nextbeat Co., an information technology service provider, has introduced two bedrooms in its Tokyo offices. Power naps have also long since landed in Europe: in Switzerland and Great Britain they are already a right recognized by some employers.
