Against Germany to enter the speed limit on the highways

Political controversy has erupted in Germany on the occasion of energy crisisas the proposal to enter the table of the German government fell speed limit on highways to save energy.

According to the Athens News Agency, the state’s environment ministers unanimously decided in favor of the measure, but the federal government remains opposed, mainly due to the attitude of the Liberals (FDP).

A possible introduction of a speed limit would be a cut for the culture of the country, as 60% of the highways do not currently have a speed limit, but only a Recommended for driving at speeds up to 130 km / h. The 16 environment ministers, however, failed to agree on a specific limit, although most find the 120 or 130 km / h limit realistic.

According to the Federal Environment Agency, imposing a speed limit of 120 km / h would save 2.6 million tonnes of CO2 per year, while if the limit was 130 km / h the savings would reach 1.9 million tons of CO2. But if a limit of 100 km / h was imposed, it would save 5.5 million tonnes of CO2 per year.

The debate on imposing a speed limit on highways has been on the agenda for years, mainly of the Greens, while after the rapid rise in energy prices it has returned to a more serious level and with the support of other parties. In addition, according to a survey by the German Institute (IW), 77% of Germans drive at speeds below 130 km / h, even in areas where there is no speed limit. The final decision will be made by the Federal Parliament.
