On April 23, the Internet giant Google filed a lawsuit against Roskomnadzor with the Moscow Arbitration Court. The American company wants to challenge the requirements of the domestic regulator to remove links on YouTube to the so-called “illegal content”. This was announced on Monday, May 24, by Kommersant.
Prior to that, Google had never initiated legal proceedings involving Roskomnadzor, usually acting as a defendant or witness in such cases. But now the Internet giant is ready to challenge the actions of the regulator to restrict access to its services. We are talking about the requirement of Roskomnadzor to block 12 links to “illegal content” on YouTube, which the department recognized as calls for participation in the January rallies.
Interestingly, the lawsuit was filed specifically from Google LLC, and not from subsidiary Google LLC. According to experts interviewed by Kommersant, the Internet giant decided to go to court through its main legal entity in order to increase its chances of winning.
It is also worth noting that this is not the only case involving Google and Roskomnadzor that is currently underway in a Russian court. Thus, one of the most notorious cases was the lawsuit filed against Google by the TV channel Tsargrad due to the blocking of its YouTube channel. The Internet giant explained the blocking by compliance with the sanctions regime, but the Moscow Arbitration Court found the blocking illegal and ordered to recover a penalty from Google. However, the decision has yet to come into effect, as Google’s lawyers have filed an appeal.
