Against vaccine passport, Canadian truck drivers block bridge with the US

Canadian truck drivers on Tuesday blocked the country’s busiest crossing with the United States as Prime Minister Justin Trudeau prepared to discuss the growing crisis with lawmakers.

Drivers demand an end to the mandatory Covid-19 vaccine for cross-border traffic. They first arrived in the Canadian capital, Ottawa, on January 28, and were taking over the center of the city.

As the police began to regain control of the region, protesters – many of whom are demanding that Trudeau resign – shifted their focus to the Ambassador Bridge, which connects the cities of Detroit (USA) and Windsor (Canada). Trucks began blocking traffic on Monday, and the bridge was closed in both directions, according to the Canadian government.

Canada exports 75% of its goods to the United States, and trucks play a crucial role. “We were sent here to send a message, and it’s not getting through,” Ottawa protest spokesman Tom Marazzo said Monday night.

Trudeau, who spent ten days in isolation after catching Covid-19, would return to the Chamber later this Tuesday to talk to opposition lawmakers. They demand that the country do more to end what they call “national humiliation”. The government says police forces must restore order.
