Etarism, or age-related prejudice, returned to the agenda after the case of university students from Bauru, in the interior of São Paulo, who classified the fact that they had a 40-year-old classmate as an “absurdity”.
The video posted on social media went viral and caused commotion in support of the student.
In an interview with CNN Radio on CNN No Plural, the creator from the profile “Quarentamos”on Instagram, Raphaella Avena stated that she receives reports of ageism every day from followers.
“Age is not a limitation, we need to reframe ageism, we talk about plurality in different types of themes, why not also about 40?”, he questioned.
On social media, she deals with topics aimed at women over 40.
According to the specialist, the issue is usually “very subtle”, not blatant.
“There are wide open situations like those prejudiced girls, but usually it comes in the form of you not being heard, you start to be put aside, as if you were overtaken and it becomes ‘coffee with milk’.”
Raphaella believes that the best way to reverse the situation is to “occupy spaces”: “Nothing is a better answer than that, the antidote is this: fighting to have a voice.”
She remembers that it is important that the experience and trajectory of life are taken into account, in all spheres of life.
In her work, the image specialist says that she chose to treat the subject “lightly”, although she recognizes that militancy is important and “needs to exist in every movement.”
“However, my voice is one of bringing humor,” he added.
