Ageism, 6 out of 10 women have been told they were too old or too young

«Model at your age? I have often been asked this question which has the bitter taste of judgement. As if they wanted to convey the inadequacy of my choice». Valeria Sechi is 57 years old and five children, and at age 50 she fulfilled her dream of becoming a model. «As if there were a regulation that establishes what is correct to do and what is not based on one’s identity card. As if we, as people, did not exist. And yet it is not so. We exist and our well-being has value just like our choices and our ambitions».

Valeria Sechi is one of many people (approx 60% in Europeaccording to a 2020 World Health Organization study) a victim of ageism, a word coined in 1969 by geriatrician Robert Butler by assonance and analogy with the words sexism and racism, which indicates the prejudice of one age group against other age groups. Over time, the topic has expanded to include gender disparity.

This is the topic at the heart of QVC’s social campaign, “I’m not old enough?”, to fight preconceptions of all kinds, taboos and the limits imposed by society. The company has developed various video materials to engage with women and encourage recognition of each person’s uniqueness, to make the world a place where everyone is free to be themselves.

But, on the other hand, ageism can affect not only mature women, but also younger ones, and can risk limiting them. Carlotta Delicato, chef, born in 1994won the television talent show at the age of 22 Hell’s Kitchen, then he opened his own restaurant in a small village in Lazio. «I am honored to be testimonial of the campaign “I’m not old enough?” why it is important to send very clear messages to younger women. It’s not easy to chase your dreams, but strength comes above all from the clarity of one’s goals. It is then that nothing can stop us. As women we must believe more in ourselves and in our strength so as to fight the prejudices that still exist. It’s not true that we have to choose between family and dreams: we can do everything well without having to give up one thing or the other».
