Agreement with UAE: SYRIZA voted in favor but with objections and leaks – N. Voutsis Reservations

LAST UPDATE: 18. 15

SYRIZA voted in favor of the agreement with the United Arab Emirates in Parliament, but with leaks and objections from within.

N. Filis and Dimitris Tzanakopoulos abstained from the vote, while Nikos Voutsis stated from the floor of Parliament that he would vote in order to keep the party’s line, but he has strong reservations.

Specifically, in his speech, Nikos Voutsis stated that “our foreign policy in recent decades has moved within a framework which has been strengthened and supported especially by the governments with Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras and is the architecture of a multidimensional active foreign policy, to be a country of stability, peace, with non-negotiable territorial sovereignty and our national independence, armed with respect for international law, an active policy within the framework of the European Union. ”

He noted, however, that the prime minister had announced a new strategy and a new doctrine of “belonging to the West as its outpost”. “It pursues the diplomacy of super-armaments, in addition to the need for adequate defense of the country and a foreign policy with interventions and commitments beyond our region, such as in the Sahel, the Patriots in Saudi Arabia, the agreement with Israel for Kalamata.”

Regarding Ukraine, he criticized the arms shipment, saying that it was “a great danger for our country to be directly involved in military operations.”

He opposed the agreement with the US on an indefinite basis, saying that it departed from the policy pursued by all governments after the coup.

Regarding the reciprocity in the defense provided by the cooperation with the UAE, the former Speaker of Parliament said that this “is a step beyond the involvement of our country, not only unnecessary, but very problematic.”
