Agribusiness freights rise 27.4% and move BRL 10.7 billion until May, says survey

Brazilian agribusiness handled R$10.7 billion in freight in the year to May, an increase of 27.4% compared to the same period in 2021, driven by the transport of fertilizers and grains, said Destinobras.

In a survey to Reuters, the cargo transport platform reported that agribusiness accounted for almost a third of the total of BRL 29.7 billion in freight handled between January and May, followed by industry with BRL 8.2 billion, and construction sector with R$ 4.5 billion.

“Agro, as an engine of growth in Brazil, has been breaking crop records every year. Even with the adverse weather conditions, growth has been maintained, and the rise in the dollar encourages producers to export”, said Destinobras, justifying the sector’s progress.

Fertilizers were the most transported products by the agricultural segment until May, accounting for a quarter of the total volume, and with an increase of 19% in the annual comparison.

The move comes at a time when rural producers accelerate negotiations to purchase the input that will be used in the 2022/23 grain harvest, whose planting begins in September, in the face of uncertainty in the supply of fertilizers caused by the war between Russia and Ukraine.

Next, the most transported products were soybeans, corn and wheat. The winter cereal represented only 5% of the volume transported by agribusiness, but had a 175% increase in relation to the same period of the previous year.

In 2022, wheat exports were more intense in the first months of the year after a full harvest last year, attractive prices and demand in the international market, also influenced by the war in Eastern Europe — Russia and Ukraine are two important global suppliers of the cereal.

Also according to Veículobras, 3.71 million freights were published on the platform from January 1 to May 28, 2022, covering 95% of the national territory. The volume is 31.4% higher in the annual comparison.

The agricultural sector accounted for 35.9% of the total volume of freight, with 1.33 million, an increase of 26.1% compared to the first five months of last year, the data showed.
