Agricultural insurance covers damages caused by Filomena’s snow but now they fear the impact of frost

The passage of the storm Filomena has left heavy snowfalls in a good part of the Iberian Peninsula, with special incidence in areas of important agricultural production. From Agroseguro, the sector’s employers’ association, they explain to that it is still too early to take stock of the damage caused, but they remember that the damage caused by this type of meteorological phenomenon is covered by the Spanish Insurance system Combined Agrarian. In addition, they confess that the worst has not yet happened, as they fear the damage that the frosts planned for these next few days may cause.

With regard to claims caused by snowfall and wind, they are collected in all agricultural insurance lines and, in the case of frosts – an insurable option for farmers – damages suffered can be covered both crops and trees. In addition, the insurance also offers the possibility of secure and protect facilities to the damage that strong storms can cause. Additionally, damage suffered by livestock as a result of low temperatures (hypothermia) or collapse of the facilities are also included within the agricultural insurance coverage.

“The Spanish agricultural insurance system is a world reference because it covers practically all crops and all risks,” he explains Sergio de AndrÃs, Director of Production and Communication of Agroseguro, in a telephone conversation.

The organization also recalls that the presence of snow is not necessarily negative for the field, as it represents an important source for aquifers and an additional supply of water for crops. Therefore, it is estimated that the losses caused by the snowfalls will not be generalized, although serious damages are expected from the heavy frosts that have accompanied the storm, and which are expected to continue in the coming days.

The crops that at this time may suffer the most damage from low temperatures are winter production vegetables (artichoke, broccoli, cauliflower, spinach and lettuce), greenhouse-grown vegetables, citrus and olive groves, although its extent cannot yet be known exactly. The areas with the greatest prediction of diseases they are Castilla-La Mancha, the Valencian Community, Aragon, Catalonia, Navarra, La Rioja and the southeast of the peninsula (Murcia and Almería region).

As explained by Agroseguro, people who register some type of damage should go to their company or policyholder, send a claim report of the damage suffered and wait for the insurer’s expert opinion.

They have not yet received a large number of applications on this day, although they point out that both their central office and the eleven territorial delegations throughout Spain are prepared to guarantee adequate service to insured farmers and ranchers.
