The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) announced that it will invest US$ 1.2 billion in sustainable projects for Brazilian agriculture, through a new credit line. The aim is to finance projects for the sustainable development of agricultural production chains, small businesses and provide land tenure regularization.
The information, released by the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply (Mapa), also points out that, of this total, US$ 230 million will be allocated to the Support Program for Agricultural Development in the Northeast (AgroNordeste) by the Ministry.
According to the statement, the capital will be invested in the development of economic opportunities in agricultural value chains, in land and environmental regularization. In addition, projects to expand the area free from fruit flies in Rio Grande do Norte and Ceará, as well as the Consolidation of the Phytosanitary Protection Area for fruit flies in the São Francisco Valley region will also be covered. .
The beneficiaries of the investment will include associations and cooperatives in Piauí, which have honey production; Rio Grande do Norte, which has mango production and sheep farming; from Paraíba, with the production of skins, hides and sheep and goats; Sergipe, with milk production; Espírito Santo, with the production of black pepper; and from Minas Gerais, production of starch and cassava. Altogether, more than 166,000 producers will benefit, regardless of whether they are associated with institutions.
The availability of these lines of credit is ten years, and the projects presented must be in line with the policies to support the agricultural sector and rural development, defined as priorities by the Strategic Plan 2020-2031 of MAPA.
The IDB has become one of Brazil’s partners since its creation in 1959, and has already carried out several projects of high social and economic relevance in partnership with the Federal Government, such as operations in support of agricultural defense, irrigation, modernization of the system Brazilian agricultural defense, financial cooperation and sustainability initiatives.
With this new proposal, the intention follows the same line: to improve the productivity and resilience of the agricultural sector, income and access to basic services in rural Brazil. It will also be able to interact with the private sector in achieving the goals, according to the Ministry.
