The fires are suspended for 120 days in Brazil. The decree published in the Official Gazette regulates the measure that is not new at this time of year, when the dry season begins in the country. The objective is to prevent fires.
There are exceptions, such as fire-fighting actions carried out by public institutions, the use of fire in subsistence agriculture by traditional and indigenous populations, and scientific research activities.
According to Luciana Gatti, coordinator of the greenhouse gas laboratory at INPE (National Institute for Space Research), which regulates fires in the country, fires hinder not only vegetation, but also agriculture, as they inhibit rain.
“Initiatives to reduce fires are extremely important for agriculture,” said the expert.
