Matopiba, a region that encompasses the states of Maranhão, Tocantins, Piauí and Bahia, is currently responsible for 12% of all soybean production in Brazil. If it were a country, it would be the 5th largest soy producer in the world.
The agricultural frontier also includes preservation areas, quilombos and indigenous people, in addition to production focused mainly on harvesting corn, soybeans and cotton. With more than 70 million hectares, the region diversifies what it produces, with fruits and livestock.
THE CNN spoke with Humberto Miranda, president of the National Rural Learning Service (Senar) Bahia, to learn more about Matopiba.
“In the Matopiba region, we have the best technology available, all with environmental sustainability. In western Bahia, we are also using the grains for animal protein, as food for poultry, swine and cattle. As a result, income tends to increase.”
