Embrapa Pecuária Sul has just launched a new method to measure the emission of methane gas in cattle of European breeds. The technology, called Proof of Emission of Gases (PEG), may help in the selection of breeding stock, combining weight gain with less gas production during digestion.
The tool could increase the sustainability of Brazilian livestock, helping to reduce gas emissions that influence climate change.
Fernando Cardoso, a researcher at Embrapa Pecuária Sul, explained how the PEG works: “A pipe is adapted to a harness that captures the cattle’s breath. With that, we can set up production systems that are neutral in terms of global warming potential”.
With the help of the tool, it is possible to make livestock more sustainable. “By capturing and emitting the same amount of gases, we totally neutralize the effects of livestock production on climate change,” said Cardoso.
