Researchers from Embrapa Milho and Sorghum, in the Cerrado of Minas Gerais, proved that it is possible to reduce and even neutralize the emission of methane from cattle by adopting the Integration Lavoura Pecuária Floresta (ILPF) system. Methane causes damage to the environment as it is a greenhouse gas.
The research, carried out in pasture areas, shows that trees in different models of this system are able to fix carbon in their trunks.
Researcher Miguel Gontijo Neto, from Embrapa Corn and Sorghum, explains that “the simple use of a few eucalyptus trees in a network in a pasture can already bring this benefit”.
In addition, Gontijo emphasizes that the practice can lead to the addition of value of environmental gain in meat. The producer can even join the carbon neutral meat certification system.
